What Is Paywall?

The in-app screen that prompts users to purchase a subscription or unlock paid features, typically shown at a strategic moment in the user journey.

Paywall design is the single highest-leverage piece of UX in a subscription app. It's the conversion screen that turns browsers into payers. Good paywalls balance urgency (time-limited offers, trial expiration countdown) with clarity (what you get, what it costs). Day-1 paywalls (immediately on open) work for obviously-paid categories like meditation or fitness. Deferred paywalls (after user experiences value) work for tools and utilities.

Common Questions

When should the paywall appear?
Day-1 for high-intent categories (meditation, fitness) where users come in ready to pay. Deferred (after first successful use) for utilities where trust must be built.
Annual or monthly first?
Typically annual is top-left (more prominent) with monthly as alternate. Annual usually converts 60-70% of subscribers at a ~50% higher LTV than monthly.
